MINNEAPOLIS -- More flow is on the go to the collegiate level. On Wednesday, the Minnesota Mullets announced forward Morgan Sweeney has committed to ACHA Waldorf University in Forest City, IA.

“Waldorf is going to be a great fit for me,” Sweeney said. “It’s close to home and will give me a good opportunity to keep improving my game and my studies.”

Sweeney scored 19 goals and added 25 assists in 44 games during the 2019-20 season, good for 4th on the team in points and tied for 3rd in goals. Five of his goals were game winners, and Sweeney was one of four Mullets to record a shorthanded goal this season. Sweeney was also awarded the Tom Strelow Tough Award for his work on the penalty kill, regularly throwing himself in front of a shot or taking a hit to make a play. Sweeney played in every game, including in the playoffs, during his two seasons with the Mullets, scoring 29 goals and 29 assists in that span.

“The support from my family, teammates and coaches has really helped me get to this point, and I can’t thank them enough for that,” Sweeney said. “No matter how big the hill in front of me is, I know I can enjoy overcome any challenge with the people around me.”

Sweeney plans to pursue an education degree.

“Today is a great day for the Mullet family; Morgan Sweeney is off to college,” Mullets Head Coach Chris Walby said. “Waldorf University is an ideal situation for Morgan to focus on his grades, focus on being a student and it provides an opportunity for him to play hockey in a structured environment and at an elite level. We are extremely happy for him.”

With the commitment to Waldorf, Sweeney is the 44th player from Walby’s programs to advance to a collegiate program over the past eight years. For more information on the Mullets program, go to www.mulletshockey.com.
