Mullets Forward Commits to D-III Finlandia

By: Dan Bradley

MINNEAPOLIS -- As the Minnesota Mullets' college commitment count keeps going up, the latest Mullet to join the list is headed to the U.P. On Wednesday, the Minnesota Mullets announced forward Tyler Perkins has committed to continue his academic and hockey career at Finlandia University (NCAA Division III) in Hancock, MI.

“I’m very excited to hit the ice for Finlandia in the fall and to get my education started at a great school,” Perkins said. “Coach Burcar reached out to me not long after the season ended and made it pretty easy for me to choose Finlandia as my next step. I’m already looking forward to getting to know the team I’ll be playing with for the next few years and to keep playing good hockey at a high level.”

Perkins finished the 2019-20 season scoring 38 goals and adding 41 assists in 42 games; his team-leading 79 points placed him 9th among USPHL Premier Division scorers. In two seasons with the Mullets, the Janesville, WI native scored 56 goals and 59 assists in 63 games.

“There are so many great memories from my time with the Mullets that I’ll be taking with me to Finlandia,” Perkins said. “The workouts, the bus rides, the games, everything was just one great memory. It will be a challenge jumping back into a school routine after three years of juniors, but I know I can overcome that challenge. The Mullets organization pushed me to be a better hockey player and a better person; I’m so thankful for everyone who has been a part of the Mullets, and to my family, especially my grandparents, for all of their support. Without them, I would not have been able to this. I’ll cherish these moments forever!”

Perkins is undecided on a major, but said he is strongly considering a degree in the business management field.

“I’m really excited for Tyler,” Mullets Head Coach Chris Walby said. “He’ll be joining a strong nucleus of returning players and what appears to be a solid recruiting class. Coach Burcar has done a great job rebuilding his program. Tyler is going to fit in right away with what (Coach Burcar) is doing and contribute immediately to the team’s success. He competes hard and is going to have an awesome collegiate career. Tyler has been incredible here for us, scoring so many big goals and making many big plays. I’ll miss that, but I’m so excited for him and to follow his next chapter.”

With the commitment to Finlandia University, Perkins is the 38th player from Walby’s programs to advance to a NCAA collegiate program over the past eight years. For more information on the Mullets program, go to www.mulletshockey.com.
