Edina has two dramatic wins over the weekend !

The Edina Lakers started a busy weekend up in Isanti vs the Owls on Friday.  Marshall Klitzke got things started on the right track with a goal at 10:19 of the opening period.  Freshly back from injury, Brandon Zurick assisted on the goal which put the Lakers up 1-0 at the first intermission.  In the second period, Robert Erickson tied things up on the power play just a minute and a half into the period.  A short time later, Klitzke and Zurick teamed up again.  This time it was Zurick who lit the lamp, a short handed goal.  Very late in the second period, the Owls tied it up again on a shorty of their own.  Kolton Kahoot did the damage.  The Owls the put a lot of pressure on Lakers goaltender Brenden Kruckenberg, however Kruckenberg could not be beat.  This game went into overtime and eventually a shoot out where the Lakers won.

On Saturday night, the Lakers faced the Owls again, this time at MN Made.  The Owls struck first with a Nick Ernst goal at 13:06.  This was a fluke goal where a centering pass went off a Laker defenders skate and into the net.  In the second period, Taylor Bargar scored just after the Owls killed a penalty.  This made it a two goal advantage to the birds.  In the third period, Tim Prinz extended the Owls lead to three and things looked bleak for the Lakers.  However, in the final minute of the hockey game, Connor Bodin won an offensive zone face off and fed the puck back to Jonathon Smolders.  Smolders let fly a rocket from high in the slot that beat Austin Campell top shelf for a Lakers goal.  While the Lakers didn’t win, they did gain some momentum to carry into Sunday nights game.

On Sunday, the Lakers traveled to Hudson, WI to match up with the Crusaders.  Things didn’t get started right as Eric Zwaska scored to put Hudson up 1-0 less than seven minutes into the opening period.  Christian Kalupy extended the Crusader advantage to two at 2:32 of the second, this one on the power play.  Finally, the Lakers got going at 15:22 of the middle period.  Daniel Handberg scored, from Anton Martirosian and Michael Gullen.  Then, exactly two and a half minutes later, Adam Wiertzema tied the game with Martirosian getting his second assist and Matt Kroening also assisting.  This tie survived through the third period.  In overtime, Zurick scored from Kroening to give the Lakers the extra point.  Kruckenberg, playing his third game in as many nights, stopped 29 of 31 shots go earn the victory.  His presence all weekend was huge in helping the Lakers earn 4 out of a possible 6 points.

Next weekend, the Lakers travel to the Wisconsin Dells to face the Ducks.
