Mullets Clinch Four Seed, Home Ice in First Round of Playoffs

By: Dan Bradley

FOREST LAKE, MN -- As the regular season draws to a close, the Minnesota Mullets have set the stage for a playoff run. Minnesota locked up a 4th Place finish in the USPHL Premier Midwest-West Division after a statement week, featuring a series split against the second-place Wisconsin Rapids RiverKings Monday and Tuesday, and a shutout win over the third-place Minnesota Blue Ox on Saturday.

As a result of the wins, the Mullets clinched home ice in a first-round playoff series with the Wisconsin Muskies (dates and times for those games TBD). The Mullets sport a 3-1 record against the Muskies this year, most recently a dramatic 6-5 come-from-behind, OT victory on February 3.

But the road to the playoffs is far from over…

Minnesota has four games to play this week to finish out the regular season, all on the road. Two of those games (Tuesday at 7:00PMand Wednesday at 11:30AM against the Hudson Havoc) are makeup games after the Boston Showcase was snowed out. The other two (7:30PM on Friday and Saturday against the RiverKings) were already on the calendar.

Hudson has already been eliminated from playoff contention. Wisconsin Rapids is currently in second place with two games to go and a two-point lead over the Blue Ox.

The Mullets will be the only team in the division with four games to play this week.

“It’s going to be a busy week, but we’re up for the challenge,” Mullets Head Coach Chris Walby said. “We’ve got 12 mini-games to go until the playoffs. We’re excited to play at home again, but we know our focus needs to be on the games this week. Momentum going into the playoffs is important, and we want to be playing out best hockey going forward.”
