Mullets Rout of Muskies Propels Minnesota to Showdown with Moose

FOREST LAKE, MN -- While most teams get brooms out when they complete a sweep, the Mullets needed shovels and ice scrapers following Saturdaynight’s win over the Wisconsin Muskies. Following a dramatic 4-3 overtime victory on Friday night, the Mullies, much like the snow outside the rink, refused to let up, winning 7-1 and eliminating the Muskies from playoff contention.

Friday night saw the Muskies jump out to an early lead, with Mitch El-Wailli scoring on the power play to take a 1-0 first period lead. Dalton L’Allier answered in the second period to tie the game 1-1 heading into the third period. After goals from Richard Szabo and Owen Leberknight, the Mullets trailed 3-1 with eight minutes remaining in regulation before Tommy Strelow lit the lamp on the power play, and Joey Brophy scored with :34 remaining in regulation to force overtime. Tyler Kulas added the overtime winner, completing the comeback and giving the Mullets a 1-0 series lead.

Wisconsin struck first on Saturday as well, Richard Szabo notching his second goal of the weekend. Minnesota answered with seven unanswered goals (four in the second, three in the third). Andrue Trelstad, celebrating his 19th birthday, led the way for the Mullies with two goals and an assist. Dalton L’Allier also had a goal and three assists, with Dylan Hullaby, Tommy Strelow, Joey Fodstad and Tyler Kulas rounding out the scoring for the 7-1 victory.

Next up for the Mullets is another best-of-three series, this time with the division-winning Minnesota Moose. The Moose won all four regular season matchups between the two teams, outscoring the Mullies 19-6 in those games. Their last meeting was a 4-1 win for the Moose in Forest Lake on January 14.

Games will start at 7:10PM on Wednesday and Thursday.  If a Game 3 is necessary, the time on Friday is still to be determined. All games will be played at Fogerty Ice Arena in Blaine.
