Mullets Defenseman Commits to College of St. Scholastica

By: Dan Bradley

FOREST LAKE -- The Minnesota Mullets are excited to announce defenseman Jon Hansen has committed to the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN.

Hansen, a native of Twig, MN, led the Mullets with 49 points (10 goals, 39 assists) in the 2017-18 regular season, which was also top among USPHL – Premier Division defensemen. To follow up his regular season success, Hansen recorded two goals and three assists in four playoff games. Additionally, Hansen served as one of the captains of the Mullets during his time in Forest Lake.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting my classmates and professors at the school,” Hansen said. “I’ve already met a few of the current hockey players. They are really good guys and I think it will be the same for everyone else on campus. Being from the area, getting to go to a school close to home is a major positive as well."

St. Scholastica finished the 2017-18 season with a 15-11-1 record, finishing in 6th place in the NCHA. The team underwent a coaching change this offseason, but that didn’t deter Hansen.

“I’m excited to get a fair shot of competing to play on a really good hockey team, and I’m thankful I get to play hockey while getting a great education. My (defensive partner) from high school also goes to St. Scholastica, so I’m looking forward to playing with him again in the future.”

While he has not yet declared a major, Hansen noted St. Scholastica’s programs for students with an undecided major played a part in his decision to attend. He also hinted at looking into a career in the medical field, citing a family history, but will be keeping his options open.

“Jon has been such a vital component to our team the last two years,” Mullets Head Coach Chris Walby said. “His leadership on and off the ice has been critical to our overall success.  He has been a big part of what we've built here and he will be missed daily.  St. Scholastica is getting a hard worker, a smart kid, a gifted leader and a talented hockey player."

Hansen believes his time playing junior hockey was a great benefit, both on and off the ice.

“I wasn’t entirely sure about playing a second year of junior hockey, but looking back on it, I’m really glad I did,” Hansen said. “I think I really matured as a person during my two years in Forest Lake, and I’m going to carry these friendships with me for a lifetime. Coach Walby gave me all the opportunities and assets I needed to become a better player, and it’s quite rewarding to see that being confirmed with the opportunity to play at St. Scholastica.”

As a head coach, Walby has sent 28 players from his Junior programs to play in the NCAA in the past six years.
