Mullets Shave Moose, Carry Win Streak to Chicago Showcase

By: Dan Bradley

FOREST LAKE, MN -- As sounds of a homecoming game echoed in the distance, the Mullets rolled into the Forest Lake Sports Center on Friday eager for a homecoming of their own. Friday night saw just the second home game of the season for the Mullies, a needed respite with nine of the first 11 games played on the road to begin the 2018-19 campaign.

Fresh off a road win against the Minnesota Blue Ox, the Mullets found themselves with a chance to take first place on the horizon, but a home-and-home series with the Minnesota Moose would present a tough challenge. The Mullets went winless against the Moose in the 2017-18 season losing four regular season games and two playoff games against last year’s Midwest-West Division Champs.

A strong first period from goaltender Jack Bostedt kept the game scoreless, despite a barrage of shots from the Moose. Nate Holm found the back of the net early in the second to start the scoring with his team-leading 7thgoal of the season. Niko Sinatra added an insurance goal in the third, and the Mullets would hold on for a win despite a late goal from Philip DeSaava. With the win, the Mullets (4-1-2) overtook the Moose for first place in the Midwest-West Division Standings. FINAL SCORE: Mullets 2, Moose 1.

THREE STARS:

  1. Jack Bostedt (29 saves, 1 GA)
  2. Nate Holm (1G, +1)
  3. Niko Sinatra (1G, +1)

Back on the road on Saturday, the Mullets headed west to Fogerty Arena for

Game 2 of the weekend series. An exciting first period saw the teams combine for seven first period goals, four for the Mullies (Holm, Hullaby, Hullaby, Gutterman) and three for the Moose (Rukamp, Kitagawa, Harding). Rukamp would tie the game at four with his second goal of the night, but Tyler Kulas and Nate Holm would each tally in the second and the Mullets didn’t look back from there. A third period goal from Jack Hauswirth would cut the lead down to one, but Jack Bostedt came through again, recording 20 saves in the third period and securing a 6-5 win for the Mullies.

THREE STARS:

  1. Nate Holm (2G, 1A)
  2. Dylan Hullaby (2 Goals)
  3. Jack Bostedt (41 Saves)

The Mullies will be looking to extend their three-game win streak at the Chicago

Showcase this weekend. Minnesota will play two games on Friday (12:30PM against the Carolina Eagles, 6:50PM against the Atlanta Jr. Kings) and two on Saturday (12:20PM against the Tampa Bay Juniors and 9:00PM against the Charlotte Rush).
